"Portland is a city where centuries of rain have cut a deep vein of river down the center. Here flowers flourish and small fish glide through gutters. I live in the Eliot neighborhood, where the soft Louisiana accents of my neighbors have been drowned out by contractors' hammers or driven out by banksters and gentrification. The nearby intersection of Northeast Williams and Russell, once jumping with cocktails and commerce and Chinese food, is now just grass and broken promises."
